The Story of Britain's Best BuildingsUser Review - Book Verdict
This volume highlights eight remarkable buildings-Durham Castle, Windsor Castle, Tower Bridge, Holyrood House, Blenheim Palace, Cardiff Castle, Midland Grand Hotel, and Highpoint One-and their place in British history. Whether they all qualify as the "best" is a question of individual taste, but all are worthy of discussion. Architectural historian and BBC commentator Cruickshank (London: The Art of Georgian Buildings) provides a good overview of each building, although much of interest is necessarily left out in such a brief, introductory survey. The discussion of the building and operation of the Tower Bridge will interest casual readers, as will the fascinating history of the Midland Grand Hotel near the St. Pancras railway station. Produced to accompany a BBC special, the well-written volume has been carefully researched and contains 120 beautifully reproduced photographs. It will delight Anglophiles and instruct the young, and as such it warrants a place in public and school libraries.-Martin Chasin, Adult Inst., Bridgeport, CT ...
