A Year on the Wild Side is a witty "social and natural history comedy" written by Briony Penn, writer, illustrator and lecturer, with a Ph.D. in geography. It's composed of 52 essays arranged in 12 monthly chapters (ex. in August you'll read about which berries are ripening on the west coast). This engaging book reveals the magic and humour of the natural world and reminds us of our place in it.

Review: A Year on the Wild Side

User Review  - Laura Dahlman - Goodreads

This book was pretty good I learned a lot and enjoyed it for the most part the only problem I had was that it was a bit more poetic than I normally like. I think I'd really enjoy having coffee with Mrs.Penn she seems like a really interesting person with some pretty cool ideas. Read full review

About the author (1999)

Briony Penn is a young woman of great energy and many talents. She travels BC extensively: sailing as a naturalist aboard yachts giving ecotours along the coast; visiting projects for The Land Conservancy of which she is a director; conducting research in bioregional mapping and enviromental education; and this winter, she found time to ride, unclothed, down Vancouver streets as Lady Godiva. She and her husband design interpretive facilities such as Gwaii Hanas Visitor Centre on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Briony has also taught Environmental Studies, Geography and Restoration of Natural Systems as a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia across North America.
