Review: Empire Star

User Review  - Gary4278 - Goodreads

A masterpiece of the novella. I think Empire Star is one of Delany's best pieces. Very concrete characters. As always, one must pay attention to Delany - he is a poet and expert in crafting language. Comet Jo's adventures are enthralling. Wonderful ending - very imaginative. I love this book! Read full review

Five stars for Empire Star, four and a half for Babel-17. Only 92 pages and it manages to create a more developed universe and cast of characters than most other science fiction (scratch that...most ... Read full review

Short but dense! This was my first Delany read and I was not disappointed - it was wonderfully imaginative. I adored the devil-kitten. Previous comments describing this novella as a "mobius strip" are spot on. Read full review

Rather confusing, as the time frame of events sort of breaks up by the end. More of a short story than a full novel. Read full review

Delany's novella starts as a simple story and becomes a linguistic and literary game, reminiscent of trying to figure out the beginning and end of a moebius strip. A familiar theme explored in Delany's Dhalgren. I loved it. "Simplex, complex, multiplex" - Empire Star Read full review

Maybe it just doesn't visibly update. My favorite time travel book so far. No clear tying up of the loose ends---when you reach me is a little too neat for me! What the fuck is the order of everything? What's the deal? What the fuck is going on? Who wins? When? Great. Read full review
