Investigates the major mineral discoveries in Australia from the early gold rushes through to the present day and their impact on unionism, law, religion and politics. Provides the historical backgrounds and anecdotes of such towns as Rum Jungle, Noble's Nob, Broad Arrow, Bordeaux and Siberia. Winner of the Gold Medal of the Australian Literature Society. Includes plates, glossary of mining terms, bibliography and index. Author is the recipient of the Companion of the Order of Australia and has written over 30 books, including 'A Short History of the World' and 'The Tyranny of Distance'.
