Abacus, 2008 - Great Britain - 788 pages
PLAIN TALES FROM THE BRITISH EMPIRE gathers together Charles Allen's best loved books on the British experience across the Empire: PLAIN TALES FROM THE RAJ, TALES FROM THE SOUTH CHINA SEAS and TALES FROM THE DARK CONTINENT. These vivid stories and recollections give an evocative and unique glimpse into the lost days of the Empire across India, Africa and the territories fringing the South China Sea. 'A hugely valuable record of colonial life in India, Africa and the Far East -- intimate, vivid and immensely enjoyable'Antonia Fraser

Plain Tales from the Raj.
We were all born in India, Burma, or Ceylon. The book means so much for me, as my family name comes into it from Kipling, page 37. I heard so much about India from my aunts and uncles, my father, who was himself Indian Colonial Police, though in Burma. The book matches so many of the stories told. It is a wonderful book about a greatly loved country, the hardships, the deaths, and the joys. I myself, was split off to England at age three, my mother having died in England, my father having had to go back to Burma ( I didn't meet him again till after the war, when Burma became Independent in 1947), so I can vouch for certain aspects of the book Plain Tales of the Raj, and the autobiography by MM Kaye, can vouch for so much more. It really is, an amazing book of those times.
