This book is dedicated to my exceptional brother who beats the odds everyday by always aiming for perfection, never letting autism or an intellectual disability disrupt the quality of his life or destroy his lofty goals & aspirations.Patrick excels at visual arts & sports, pushing the boundaries regularly with a highly competitive yet generous spirit, epitomising the Special Olympics creed of : Let me win, & if I cannot win, Let me be brave in the attempt.This volume comprises a selection of his paintings which I have interpreted as sonnets, alongwith poems on autism & Patrick's heroic fight to conquer this disabling developmental disorder. Lesley presents a poetic narrative of Patrick's incredible artwork. At the heart of her project lies a central objective - to reveal the beauty, wonder & struggle within everyday life - a life defined by autism with a soul yearning to be free. She strives to produce poems & images that offer the future a view of the past & to search for defining moments in ordinary life which she embeds in time with great clarity & emotion.Her ingenious use of language & clever choice of words invite you to enter into & beyond the canvas or book.Her textures in artwork & materials used alongwith her expressive & conceptual intentions totally encapsulate her creativity.Lesley is an emerging artist, photographer, poet & curator who ably assists Patrick achieve his ambitions. They complement each other perfectly.Patrick's paintings are detailed & descriptive, full of character, expression & individuality. Despite struggling with speech, Patrick endeavours to communicate effectively & clearly through paintings, photographs, & other forms of visual & performing arts, including music & dance. Recently, he has discovered new ways of creating imagery by experimenting with maps, Space, fauna & portraits of his idols, drawing from life as well as using source material taken from magazines & fine art publications. This process has allowed him to successfully develop his sensitive line, composition & application of colour, resulting in highly considered & refined drawings. Francis has exhibited in Australian & overseas galleries & has won several awards notably for his vibrant kaleidoscopic effects & strong sense of colour & patterning.
