Tennyson's Songs, with Music.

Songs from the Published Writings of Alfred Tennyson. Set to Music by various Composers. Edited by W. G. CUSINS. With Portrait and Original Illustrations by Winslow Homer, C. S. Reinhart, A. Fredericks, and Jessie Curtis. Royal 4to, Cloth, Gilt Edges, $5.00.

This is a book which cannot fail to command an | peerless songs have impressed some of the best comenthusiastic reception from all lovers of music. Ten- posers.-Hartford Daily Times. nyson's songs seem to have been written expressly for a musical setting. *** All are so good that when one once begins to particularize it is difficult to stop. The book is a treasury of artistic gems. *** One of the handsomest books that have appeared for a long time.-Philadelphia North American.

Here we find the names of noted composers of different nations all tendering their votive wreaths to the Poet Laureate of England, and paying tribute, in music, to the recognized lord of modern melody in verse. *** It is a noble tribute. These compositions for Tennyson's songs may be accepted as the expression of the deep sense of beauty with which these

It is a pleasure to meet with so admirable a volume as the one before us. The poems of Mr. Tennyson offer grand opportunities to the musician who desires to ally well-expressed sentiments with his musical composition, and the ablest song-writers of the day have contributed in this volume charming musical settings of the songs of Mr. Tennyson.-N. Y. Herald.

Such a volume of songs and music is a rarity, if not entirely unique, in the annals of musical publication. *** We congratulate the families that have the taste and culture to appreciate and employ such a book as this.-N. Y. Observer.

Eaton's Civil Service in Great Britain.

Civil Service in Great Britain.

A History of Abuses and Reforms, and their Bearing
With an Introduction by GEORGE

upon American Politics. By DORMAN B. EATON. WILLIAM CURTIS. 8vo, Cloth, $2 50.

It forms a valuable addition to the historical monographs of our literature, and possesses an equal interest for the student of history and politics, for the practical statesman, and the intelligent citizen. ** Mr. Eaton indulges in no misplaced attempts at description, or flights of ambitious rhetoric. The gravity of his style is in keeping with the dignity of his subject. His statements exhibit exhaustive research, discriminating judgment, candor of opinion, and moderation of expression. The work cannot fail to find a wide circulation among the intelligent classes of American readers.-N. Y. Tribune.

A Foreign Marriage.

A Foreign Marriage; or, Buying a Title.

Mr. Eaton spent more than a year in England, giving his attention chiefly to this subject, and enjoying excellent advantages, not only in access to official authorities, but in the opportunities open for reaching conclusions through actual familiarity with the operation of the British civil service. A large, valuable, and interesting volume contains the record of his labor. The volume is history-with all the animation which the various phases of human interest impart to this kind of writing. *** Mr. Eaton writes with vigor, earnestness, and objectiveness.-Chicago

Dexter's Congregationalism.

Congregationalism. The Congregationalism of the Last Three Hundred Years, as Seen in its Literature: with Special Reference to certain Recondite, Neglected, or Disputed Passages. With a Bibliographical Appendix. By HENRY MARTYN DEXTER. Large 8vo, 1082 pages, Cloth, $6 00.

A work which will take the highest and most permanent rank among historical treatises. As a history of Congregationalism, it is of necessity a history of the origin and development of Puritanism. It is the result of prodigious learning and research, but the immense accumulation of knowledge is well ordered and organized by singular judgment and skill, and the work is probably the most important contribution in the English language to Church history which has been made for many years.

The vast literature of three centuries has been explored by Dr. Dexter to collect the material of this work, and his catalogue of titles in Congregational bibliography would alone fill a large volume. We doubt if there has been more ample and thorough preparation for any book ever issued in this country; and while the author moves among his enormons material with perfect ease, his style has a certain quaintness and picturesqueness which are in happy keeping with the theme.

pretentious volumes-a fair outline of the present stand-point of the science: and as the author has evidently throughout gone to the original sources for his information, even the professed geologist may read his pages with advantage; for it is not a small book compiled from a larger one, or a "popular" treatise made by watering out with words some technical researches.-Examiner, London.

Murphy's Sporting Adventures in the Far West.

Sporting Adventures in the Far West. By J. M. MURPHY. Illustrated. 12mo, Cloth, $1 50. An exceedingly interesting volume. * * * The book | in the course of his wanderings is judiciously distribis clearly and graphically written, and with an evi-uted through the book, serving to enliven and give dent knowledge of the subjects treated which gives it additional value. Not one page is dull or uninteresting. The book is profusely illustrated with spirited cuts, and is destined to attain a large share of public popularity.-N. Y. Evening Express.

Will achieve a deserved popularity. The author has spent seven years in the region whereof he writes, has hunted in the choicest spots of the West, and has had the advantages of long association with some of the best hunters, trappers, and scouts to be found beyond the Rocky Mountains. Added to this thorough practical knowledge of his subject, he knows how to make a good story better by telling it well. *** The fund of entertaining anecdote that he has accumulated

point to his doctrine, and, as we have said, his stories gain not a little by being well told. Sportsmen who intend making a Western trip should read this book; and it should be read also by the sportsmen who would be glad to make a Western trip, but who are forced by an unkind fate to stay at home.-Philadelphia Times.

An attractive volume, full of interest, information, and entertainment to lovers of adventure and knights of the gun. *** His book is more than a mere collection of sporting notes and thrilling encounters with wild beasts, and will interest many who care but little for the details of the pursuit and slaughter of animals.-Observer, N. Y.

With accompanying Cards, for Exercises in Writing, Printing, Drawing, and Numbers. Slates, with Cards, 40 cents.

The surface of this Slate (on one side) is ruled with | vertical, horizontal, and oblique lines, the ruling of the upper half being intended to aid the pupil in attaining a uniform length and slope for the letters. This ruling, while perfectly distinct to the eye, is not sufficiently deep or broad to offer any obstruction to the free use of the pencil. The Cards containing the Writing-Lessons present on the reverse side models for Drawing, the copying of which is greatly facil itated by the oblique, vertical, and horizontal lines ruled on the lower portion of the surface of the Slate.

*Harper's School History.

The system of penmanship taught by these Cards is the same as that of "HARPER'S WRITING-BOOкs," and is systematic and progressive. The Cards also give exercises in Printing, and in the formation of properly shaped Figures. The Copies and Models are printed in white on black ground, so that the exercises may be made exact fac-similes, in color as well as in line, of the copies; and the Cards are protected by the casing in the upper portion of the slate-frame. One side of the Slate is unruled, and can therefore be used in the same manner as the ordinary slate.

ing events which have occurred in the history of the world, beginning at the earliest periods, and coming down through the Assyrian, Persian, Grecian, Roman, and British Empires, to the organization of the American Republic, and the establishment of the American Constitution.
