EDITOR'S PREFACE. 1838

[ocr errors]

In preparing this edition of Euclid for the press, the Editor has scrupulously adhered to the text of Dr. Simson, at least with one exception, where a departure from it will, by all geometers, be admitted to be not only justifiable, but absolutely necessary. The first Proposition of Book III. has been long known to be imperfectly demonstrated; and, as the defect may be supplied by the addition of but two or three lines to the original text, the Editor has not hesitated to introduce the amendment. This

may

be regarded äs by far the principal departure that has been made from the text of the Quarto Edition of 1756, &c. The present, however, will be found

to differ considerably from the preceding 12mo O Edition (1832), which abounds with errors in

the marginal references ; these have all been corrected, and many new and needful references

added. From these circumstances, and from the b care which has been bestowed on the proofs as the

work passed through the press, it is expected that no error or omission of

any consequence will appear in the present impression.
