But the Low and the WEAK shall mighty be:
Nor far away

Is that bright day

Which yet the CHURCH shall see.

Then shall rejoice the wilderness

In blossoms like the rose,

And Righteousness and Truth shall bless
And knit together foes:
God's people then shall be as one

In an eternal union,

And the TRUE and the JUST shall joyous be;
And come what may

To stand in the way,

That day the CHURCH shall see.

We daily ask for that bright day;
Then let us daily strive

To walk betimes in God's own way,
And in his counsels live;

Nor fear when wrong or ill assail,
For his true Church shall never fail,

And the SAVED and REDEEMED shall happy be. Then come what may

To stand in the way,

That day the CHURCH shall see.

SMILES OF EVENING.

SMILES of Evening o'er us beaming,
Holy blushings of the West,
Rays of beauty softly gleaming

From the sunset to the breast!

Whose the charm of daylight dying?

Whose the beams that round us shine? Angel echoes seem replying,

Lord of Glory--They are thine.

Dropping dews from flowers distilling
Nectar juices to the bee,
Fragrant airs the valleys filling,
Speak, eternal Lord, of Thee;
And this fair and bright creation,
Hush'd to peace in day's decline,
Now seems awed to adoration:
Lord of Glory-All is thine.

Hark, the beetle now is ringing,
Through the air of twilight dim,
Songs of praise, while birds are singing
From the grove the vesper hymn;
Softly wake the springs of feeling;
Something of a light divine
Now is to the heart revealing:

Lord of Glory-These are thine.

One by one the stars now brighten
Through the gloom their thousand eyes-
Heavenly torches, that enlighten

His great temple of the Skies;

Worlds on Worlds around us hover,
Suns and systems o'er us shine;
Soul and sense in joy discover,
Lord of Glory-They are thine.

HYMN FOR CHRISTMAS DAY.

SING on this joyous day

A cheerful roundelay!

This day our Lord came down to save
Mankind, and triumph o'er the grave;

Then, spirit, upwards soar,

And view the glory of his birth,

GOOD WILL TO MAN AND PEACE ON EARTH, And praise him evermore.

Rejoice, O Soul! rejoice, And mingle with the voice Of pure and holy cherubim, And high and lofty seraphim,

And angels fair and bright;

Who now their hymns of joy are singing,
And to the throne of God are winging
In heaven's eternal light.

Sing with the "Stars" on high,
For they were watching by;
Their joyous beams of glory shed
Above the babe's mean manger-bed
A soft and happy ray:

Yet all the stars that deck the sky,
One Soul redeemed by HIM on high,
Its worth cannot outweigh.

With lovely Flowerets sing,
In summer or in spring;

For he was Sharon's deathless "Rose,"
The "Lily" that for ever blows,

An "Amaranth" indeed,

The "Heart's Ease," and the "Passion-flower,"
The healing balm of sorrow's hour
When most our bosoms bleed.

Sing with the " Birds,” who rove
About on wings of Love;

For love is heaven's own atmosphere,
And joy its light undimmed, and clear
From turmoils, tears, and sighs;
Where like a dove the soul will flee
Unto its home, that it may be

A "Bird of Paradise."

Still sing with gladsome strain
Unto the heaving “main ;

For to the storm he uttered "Peace,
Be still," and let your tumults cease;
And still to man his voice

Would quell the tumults of the breast,
And give the troubled sinner rest:
And shall we not rejoice?

Oh yes, rejoice! rehearse,
Throughout the universe,

His constant praise in endless song;
Through day and night the strains prolong,
And laud his happy birth:

It spreads salvation far and wide,
And with Love's full, exhaustless tide,

Encircles the whole Earth!

A HYMN OF PRAISE.

GOD! JEHOVAH! LORD!

Glory to THEE!

Creator-King-Redeemer-Incarnate WORD-
Glory of all Glory-Light of all Light-
Essence eternal, unchangeable, and bright!

Glory! Eternal Glory unto Thee,
Spirit pervading nature with thy ray,
Spirit that fills the darksome heart with day,
Fountain of TRUTH DIVINE, failing us never;
Sun of our righteousness, beaming for ever!

Glory! Eternal Glory unto TheeRock of Salvation: Day-spring of Holiness, Deign, oh! deign to bless Us, as with humble hearts and bending knee, And voice exalted, we unceasingly

Cry, Glory, Eternal Glory unto THEE!

Countless myriads stand

Before thy throne;
Millions of Spirits form a glorious band,

And round thy dazzling footstool proudly shine
To acknowledge thee, in strains of melody divine,
The FIRST the LAST-the EVERLASTING One.
The high Archangel with his trump of fire;
Kindle the heavenly host and saintly choir,
With everliving Love's imperishable flame,
To laud with sacred melody thy name

Through all Eternity. The cherubim are marshall'd in thy gaze,

And ceaseless praise With the pure seraphim in burning throngs, And loud Hosannas and unending songs

Shout forth, Eternal Glory unto Thee.
