THIS is an example of the etching of the famous artist, Dürer.

The scenery is of Dürer's own time, a castle on a hill, a town, and the sea in the distance.

THE ANGELUS

IN THIS very famous picture the French peasants working in the fields hear the bells in the far-off church sound The Angelus, the evening call for prayer. They stop work, the man removes his cap, they both bow in an attitude of prayer.

This picture teaches a great lesson of reverence. Even though we are not in church, it is possible to have the attitude of prayer, to remember that God is our father, and to thank him for his goodness.

of some note. Besides his paintings, he made many wood cuts and he is also said to be the inventor of etchings and of wood cuts in two colors. He was a warm friend of Martin Luther and some of his pictures were painted with the express purpose of persuading people to a personal study of the Bible.
