Notes on the Courses

COURSE I. TRAINING COURSE FOR MOTHERS

T

HIS is intended to make more useful for busy mothers the abundance of suggestive material found in Volume 8. It is a laboratory course. There is nothing like the exchange of views and experience. The experience of the mother of one family may be immensely valuable to others. No one need be discouraged if the most earnest effort, the most devoted interest, some times fails. Failure is the ladder by which we climb to success and service. Any group of earnest mothers taking this course and discussing its suggestions will be certain to gain information and experimental suggestions of the very highest value. In this course, the chapters in Volume 8, on "The Bible in the Home," "The Bible and Religious Art," and "Home Study of the Bible" should be carefully considered. Each meeting of the club should be a mothers' conference for free discussions and consideration of practical problems. It is suggested that one of the charming original songs in Volume 1 may be sung by one of the members at each meeting. One or more Biblical dramas may also be given during the

course.

COURSE II. A YEAR OF TRAVEL IN THE HOLY LAND

This is a picture course. The Book of Life contains more than four hundred pictures of scenery and localities in the Holy Land. A study of the pictures will make these places real and vivid. The course affords a year of travel all over Palestine from Dan to Beersheba, from the Sea to Moab. The section, "Places and Persons in the Bible," will be found of especial value in connecting names and places.

COURSE III. THE BIBLE AND RELIGIOUS ART

There is no more valuable adjunct to the comprehension of the Bible and the appreciation of its spiritual value than the work of the master artists of the world. This course offers a comprehensive

study of Christian art from the earliest days to the modern painters. An excellent gallery of religious art accompanying the text contains nearly two hundred illustrations, nearly sixty of them in color, photographed by a new process directly from the original paintings. Study carefully and apply to every picture the directions given at 8:106, on how to see and appreciate pictures. The directions are simple and very easily followed. Once understood, they will offer a new world of pleasure and appreciation of the best things in life. Not only should each picture be studied with these instructions in view, but comparisons should be made of the work of different artists. This is not a course for the club meeting only. It is one which should be taken home and shared with every member of the family. A series of tableaux might be arranged for the closing meeting in which some of the great pictures may be illustrated by members of the club. Bring to a meeting a Sunday newspaper illustrated supplement to compare its pictures with those of The Book of Life.

COURSE IV. ADULT COURSE IN BIBLE HISTORY

This course may be thought a rather difficult course. It requires much reading, but it will be very rewarding in furnishing a wide knowledge of the Bible. It is intended not only for clubs, but for adult Sunday school classes, classes in the Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A., Y. P. S., C. E., and kindred organizations. While the course may be covered in monthly meetings with diligent study, it is suggested that there is ample material for two meetings a month or even for an advanced class in Sunday school, meeting every week. The introductions which precede nearly every section of The Book of Life as well as the questions and notes at the end of each general section will be found of very great value. Make free use of the geographical pictures. An index will be found at the close of

Volume 8.

COURSE V. THE LITERATURE OF THE BIBLE

The comments and directions upon Course IV might be repeated for Course V. It is a course which requires much study and reading, but it will be found especially rewarding to thoughtful and earnest Bible students. The introductions will furnish ample suggestions for guidance in the study. The very full collection of
