BE IT REMEMBERED, that on the twenty fifth day of September, in the year of our Lord 1813, and in the thirty eighth year of the independence of the United States of America, WASHINGTON ALLSTON, Esq. of the said district, has depos. ited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof he claims as author, in the words following, to wit: "The Sylphs of the Seasons, with other poems, by W. ALLSTON."

In conformity to the act of the congress of the United States, entitled, "An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned;" and also to an act, entitled, "An act, supplementary to an act, entitled, an act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned; and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints.”

MR. ALLSTON, the author of these poems, is a native of South Carolina; but had his literary education in New England. He was prepared for College in a school at Newport, and was graduated at Harvard University in the year 1800. He afterwards pursued his profession as a painter in London and Rome, for several years, and returned to this country; but without the settled purpose of taking up his abode. He is now in London, where he stands in the very first rank the artists of his profession.
