F. Survey of Theoretical Literature Musgrave (J) in 1954 was the first modern
author to consider the general theory of elastic wave propagation in single
crystals. In the introduction to his paper Musgrave gave a brief historical survey of
earlier work in this field, ending with Lord Kelvin in 1904. However, in 1927 Love
(/) published his treatise on the mathematical theory of elasticity which included
sections on elastic wave propagation, in 1941 Sakadi (2) calculated the
directions in which ...

In a later publication, Musgrave (76) discussed the existence of cuspidal edges
on elastic wave surfaces, the existence of which would permit more than three
waves to propagate along a given ray (energy flux direction). He also pointed out
that conditions for external conical refraction may prevail in hexagonal crystals.
Synge (17) presented a general mathematical analysis of elastic wave
propagation in anisotropic media and in a subsequent publication (18) presented
an analysis of ...

Lindsay (26) published a text in which he presented in integrated form a
comprehensive treatment of mechanical radiation, and Redwood (27) published
a book devoted to the theoretical analysis of guided mechanical waves. In 1961,
Farnell (28) presented a detailed treatment of elastic wave propagation in
trigonal crystals with special emphasis on quartz and sapphire. Aleksandrov and
Ryzhova (29) presented a review containing all known data on the elastic
constants of crystals.
