MEDICINES RECOMMENDED IN THE DYSENTERY, Note (3), p. 184. OIL OF CASTOR EMULSION. Take Oil of Castor, 2 ounces.. Yolk of Egg, or Mucilage of Gum Arabic, sufficient to make it mix uniformly with Decoction of Barley, Syrup of Roses, 10 ounces. 1 ounce. Mix. Dose. Four table spoonsful every second or third hour until the desired effect is obtained. Of each of these a teacupful or more may be Mix. Any of these may be taken in proper doses, and repeated agreeable to the effect wanted to be produced. Dose. Four table spoonsful every third hour until the desired effect is produced. 1-2 an ounce. 1 ounce. PURGING DRAUGHT. Take infusion of Senna, 2 ounces. Manna and Tincture of Senna, each, 1-2 an ounce. Mucilage of Gum Arabic, sufficient to form it into pills, or syrup may be added to make it into a bolus. Any of these forms may be taken in the morning early, and when they begin to operate, worked off with weak broth or thin gruel. spoonsful often in the day; or it may be acidulated with a few drops of diluted vitriolic acid; or an ounce of syrup of lemon may be added. Mix. Dose. Two table spoonsful repeated every half hour until the desired effect is produced. The above medicines are all taken from Dr. Wallis's Treatise on the "Art of Preserving and Restoring Health," and are therefore presumed to be correct; but it must be remembered by my readers that the doses are all calculated for adults, and must be proportioned according to the ages of the children to whom they are given. I shall now offer a recipe given me by a very skilful physician, who assured me of its efficacy, but as I have not tried it, having never seen a case of the hooping cough since it came into my possession, I cannot recommend it |
