Robinson's The Great Fur Land. | spects new; but the handling is such as Mr. H. M. ROBINSON, formerly Assist. to display it in a new light. Especially U. S. Consul in Manitoba, has written is this true of the biographical studies under the above title, an attractive of the Julian-Claudian families, which volume describing life in the Hudson's on broader grounds than that of the Bay territory. The following list of some of the subjects treated by Mr. ROBINSON, will give an idea of the character of his volume:

A Journey by Dog-sledge; Canoelife; the Half-breed Voyageur; the Hudson's Bay Company; Life in a Company's Hut: a Voyage with the Voyageurs; the Great Fall Hunts; the Fraternity of Medicine; the Blackfeet Indians at Home; Winter Travel; the Fur Hunter; a Winter Camp; the Frost King; a Half-breed Bull; a Wood-Indian Prade."

Rydberg's Roman Days. ROMAN DAYS, by the distinguished Swedish author, VIKTOR RYDBERG, embodies the results of careful historical studies in and out of Rome, touches lightly on its political questions, and gives (in the Roman traditions) some legendary matter not as yet brought forward by other

The art criticisms are the work of a poet and scholar; the brief historical and topographical sketches those of a clear headed philosopher and eager traveller, a quick observer, a man of general and thorough culture. The book is a picturesque mosaic of many of the brilliant, sober, gay, comic, dramatic, tragic, poetic, vulgar elements. that make up the past history of that wonderful city, and the physiognomy it bears to-day.

The Puritan and the Quaker. By R. G. B. The historical novel, when written in such a manner that the history does not overload the romance, and the romance is saved from mistreating the facts of history, is both a fascinating and a serviceable class of literature. The historian presents the narrative, and characterizes the actual personages of the time. To the historical novelist belongs the task of painting a picture of the times, of causing his reader to breathe the atmosphere of the period in which the events of history occurred. This is the success of Scott, of Manzoni, of Scheffer, and in our own country of Cooper,

RECENT IMPORTATIONS.

The author of the PURITAN AND QUAKER has attempted the task of reconstructing the period in the history of New England when the vital questions of society were those of theology, when the Puritans, fresh from the persecutions of the Thirty-nine articles, were trying to enforce, as the supreme law of the state and of society, the dogmas of the Westminster catechism, and were oppressing Baptists and Quakers who took the liberty of having convictions of their own. These were times that not only tried men's souls, but which kept their intellects sharpened, and made full test of their manhood and courage.

The picture given in THE PURITAN AND THE QUAKER is faithful, vivid and artistic, and the story, while interesting in itself, possesses of course a special interest to those whose New England ancestry took part in the events referred

Bayard Taylor's Novels, The new Cedarcroft" edition. The death of BAYARD TAYLOR has naturally caused to be reviewed the important literary work produced by him during a life that was all too short. Few authors can show a list of productions at once so varied in subject, so important in purpose, and of such uniform excellence.

the reduced price of $1.25 per volume. These volumes comprise Hannah Thurston; John Godfrey's Fortune; Kennet Square; Joseph and his Friend; Beauty and the Beast. Few American works of fiction have obtained such a marked and lasting success. Of "Hannah Thurston," the London Spectator writes:

"If Bayard Taylor has not placed himself, as we are half inclined to suspect, in the front rank of novelists, he has produced a very remarkable book— a really original story, admirably told, crowded with life-like characters, full of delicate and subtle sympathies, with ideas the most opposite to his own, and lighted up throughout with that playful humor which suggests always wisdom rather than mere fun."

Alden's Thoughts on the Religious Life. The last literary work of William Cullen Bryant was the preparation of an introduction to this little volume of his friend, JOSEPH ALDEN, D.D., on the RELIGIOUS Life. Dr. ALDEN is the Principal of the State Normal School, in Albany, and is well known as the author of the "Science of Government."

Mr. Bryant took a warm interest in all the questions connected with the reHis poems, including the noble ren-lations of religion to practical life, and dering of the two parts of Faust, com- in his introduction he has, in addition prize about a dozen volumes, and his prose works eighteen volumes more, including travels, novels, and history.

Messers Putnam have now prepared a new edition of the novels, called after the residence of the author, the "Cedarcroft" edition. They have issued this in artistically designed board covers, at

The volume itself is clearly written and eloquent, presenting elevated spiritual teaching, combined with practical suggestions as to the work of daily life.

"Wilkie Collins, in his best period, never invented a more ingeniously constructed plot, nor held the reader in such suspense until the final denoument. The most blasé novel reader will be unable to put aside THE LEAVENWORTH CASE, until he has read the last sentence and mastered the mystery which has baffled him from the beginning."-N. Y. Express.

The

Life of Louis Adolphe Thiers. By FRANÇOIS LE GOFF, Docteur-ès-Lettres, Author of a "History of the Government of National Defence in the Provinces," etc. Transl. from the author's unpublished manuscript, by THEODORE STANTON, A.M. Octavo, with Portrait, engraved on steel from the painting by Bonnat, a view of the House in Paris, and a fac-simile of a portion of the famous political Testament. 8° cloth,

This book is written especially for the American public by M. Francois Le Goff, of Paris, a French publicist of the Conservative-Republican school, who knew Thiers personally, and who is thorougly conversant with the history and politics of France. Besides the biographical narrative, which is enlivened by many fresh anecdotes, the writer attempts to present such a connected view of French political history for the last fifty years, as will throw light upon the present status in France, so incomprehensible to most Americans. The work will also be interesting as an able defence of the unity of Thiers' political life, a position rarely assumed by even the most ardent friends of the great statesman.
