Stegosaurus skeleton Armoured dinosaurs fell into two main groups - the plated
stegosaurs that were most successful in the Jurassic period, and the spiked
nodosaurs, and ankylosaurs that expanded in the Cretaceous period.
During the Triassic and early Jurassic periods there was only one zoogeographic
realm. The land areas of the world were united as part of the supercontinent of
Pangaea and the same assemblage of animals was found everywhere.
The skull of the modern titanosaur is almost identical to that of its ancestor of
Jurassic and Cretaceous times. It has a steeply sloping face with nostrils at the
top of the head and an array of peg-like teeth confined to the front of the mouth.
