I was surprised at the beauty of the imagery in this book. And Melville has a wonderful sense of humor. I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone under the age of 30 though, because I think it's easier to appreciate if you've lived a little longer first.

I have heard this book described as the greatest novel in American literature. I have heard other books described in the same way. I would say this book is not a novel. It is a philosophical treatise on the nature of humanity. It is a natural history of the whale. It is an historical record of the whaling industry. It is comic and it is tragic. I have passed the 620th page of 800 pages and have not encountered the white whale except at second hand. Never has a novel lived up less to its reputation and yet been a much more than expected joy to read.
Seat thyself sultanically among the moons of Saturn and survey the novels of this world and few will equal this one for sheer joy.
