Since my time I believe the Diplomatic Service were popularly supposed to spend their time, when they were not taking leave, in appearing at Court functions attired in brilliant uniforms, or else in going to balls, dinners, and other forms of entertainment. Nobody appeared to imagine that they spent, as was really the case, many hours a day in the Chancery of their Embassy or Legation transacting official business, and that their opportunities of relaxation were certainly no greater, and, indeed, perhaps in some instances less, than those of members of other professions. Opportunities did, however, occur, and, as is natural, one took full advantage of them. The first few months of my career abroad I spent at Madrid, and a very pleasant post it VOL. CCXX.-NO. MCCCXXXI. that the sporting capabilities of Madrid have increased, and that there is, for example, an excellent golf course in the Casa de Campo. In 1902 the golf course had not been laid out, but the grounds of the Casa de Campo were an ideal place for riding, and we used to frequent them almost every afternoon. Twice a week the Madrid Harriers met at Venta de la Rubia, and always when the work of the Chancery permitted I availed myself of the courtesy and hospitality of the Hunt Club to get a gallop with them. The pack had been in existence for a good many years, and though I speak under correction, I believe that Sir Andrew Buchanan, the father of H.M. late Ambassador at St Petersburg, was largely instrumental in starting it and L |
