APPENDIX LETTERS FROM MR. HUNTER TO NATHANIEL B. SHURTLEFF Dear Sir, 30 Torrington Square, London November 12, 1849. I beg to return my best thanks for your obliging present of a tract which contains so complete and exact an account of the persons who were in the memorable May-Flower of 1620. It is a very welcome and valuable addition to the New England department of my small library. Your surname excites in me interest and curiosity. The name is so peculiar and so rare, that despite the many varieties in the mode of writing it, all who bear it may be presumed to be of the same lineage, and it happens that among my earliest genealogical researches was the investigation of the descent of two or three branches of the family who flourished near what I conceived to have been the original seat of the family. And this led me to collect a good deal of information respecting it, the choicer parts of which are inserted in a book which is known perhaps little if at all known in America, a folio volume printed in 1819 entitled "Hallamshire: The History and Topography of the Parish of Sheffield." The fess between 3 grey-hounds' heads which was granted them by Sir Richard St. George in 1614 was in allusion to an office which some of the family had held, that of Master of the Game in Hallamshire. A curious rhyming inscription on one of them who held this office, has lately been replaced in the Church of Ecclesfield by their descendants. Few of the name remain in England, and the estates have passed either by sales or heiresses to other families. You cannot I fear connect your branch, specifically, with the parent stock, but I trust I may congratulate you on its having taken good root and flourished in the new soil. To I have the honor to be, Sir Your very faithful and obedient servant Nathaniel B. Shurtleff Esq. Boston New-England. Joseph Hunter. My Dear Sir, London 30 Torrington Square I cannot allow a single hour to pass without announcing the receipt of the two volumes which you have had the goodness to send to me. It is indeed quite a munificent gift, and I beg to return you my very best thanks. Such publications are worthy a government; and happy is your government in having found a gentleman who can carry on its designs in so admirable a manner. I very much rejoice to learn that the Plymouth Records are to follow these. You have no doubt heard that |
