Stories of Ancient

Days

HESE stories are the oldest in the world. They were told by word of mouth in the tents of wan

dering people, around the camp-fires at night, centuries before they were written down. Abraham told them to his children, Isaac told them to Jacob and Esau, and so they passed from person to person, from village to village, and thus were preserved until the time came when they were written down; and the world has had them now for centuries in our Bible. They are very beautiful and precious stories: how God made the world and the stars and beasts and birds and men and women; how Adam and Eve were driven out of the beautiful garden; how the great flood swept over the earth; and how the tower of Babel was built. Other ancient peoples possessed similar stories, but they have never been told so simply and beautifully as they are narrated in the Bible.
