A rather detailed picture of it as it appeared to my bewildered and astonished
eyes and mind when I plunged into it in 1 905 has a faint historical as well as
personal interest. At the top of it were the five civil servants, the G.A., with his O.A.
Literature, art, poetry, music, history, mathematics, science were pitchforked into
his mind in chaotic incomprehensibility. When later on in Ceylon I became an
extremely incompetent shooter of big game and, in cutting up the animals killed
upon my mind and even character which has proved indelible, a kind of reserve
or withdrawal into myself which makes me inclined always to stand just a little to
one side of my environment. But for a time I did dismiss Ceylon from my mind.
