N 724 (Continued)

found it commoner than malaria in
cases that have come "up" for
treatment; new-comers to the
district seem to suffer the worst.
My cook developed it after being
here 12 days. The number of
parasites found in the blood do
not seem to have much relation to
the severity of the attack. My cook
had two very sharp attacks - he was
very ill. Temperature 103-1040 and
spleen down to the umbilicus but the
parasites in the blood were scanty,
one or two to a slide, whilst a
little girl who came "up" feeling
comparatively well (slight headache
and temperature 102) had numerous
parasites in the blood, two in some
fields. The parasites seem to be a
good deal in length and the number
of curves, 14, 20th; some have few
curves whilst others eight or nine;
the latter probably being really two
parasites "end to end". The ticks
transmitted are all, I think,
Ornithodoros moubata.

Dr. George Wallace (6.V.1909) sent ticks to be identified, and being all

Ticks from N. & W. Nyasa Districts of Nyasaland, collected by
Dr. J. B. Davey, Karonga, N. Nyasa, and sent by him 14.IV.1909 to
Dr. Hearsey. Preserved in 90% alcohol; all ticks preserved since Jan'y
1909, were killed by dropping them into boiling fluid (abs alcohol &
1:500 Hg perchloride, equal parts); those killed earlier were dropped
into boiling water etc. Sent by Dr. H. Hearsey, P.M.O., Zomba Nyasaland:-
