REMARKS ON THE AFFINITY BETWEEN JAVANESE AND SANSKRIT WORDS. Annexed is a list of Javanese and Sanskrit words, which serves to point out the striking affinity between the two languages. Mr. Marsden having already noticed in the Asiatic Researches, vol. iv, p 217 the traces of Hindu literature extant amongst the Jávanese, I beg leave just to add, in confirmation of what he has stated, that in the course of the recital of some of their Chireenas, or dramas by one of their Gurus, I was enabled to identify many Hindu names, and was convinced beyond all doubt that they are in possession of most of the fables and stories narrated in the Puránas, particularly in the Ránåyånd and Maha Bharata, though with some slight variations in the character of the individuals. According to their own oral accounts, and from what is recorded in their chirsesas, it appears that the ancestors of the present Javanese were staunch adherents of the Hindu religion in all its superstitions, as their neighbours the Balese are at the present day, and their descendants, though now pro fessing & creed which denounces tremendous anathemas against all idolatrous customs and practices, have such a high opinion of their forefathers Institutions that they are proud to be called after the names of their gods and heroes, and feel great delight in having their dramas rehearsed as well as acted on solemn occasions. The following are the names of persons and places which occur in their dramas, and by way of elucidation I have annexed opposite to each the corresponding ones from the Purànas. In submitting the present observations to the public, I have no other object in view than to invite their attention to the subject, and I hope that they will condescend to receive my mite of information with indulgence. |
