ASSOCIATED.

The now famous Associated Northern, it may be stated, is an offshoot of the parent company. The Associated has had many vicissitudes, and its history of recent years is pretty well known. Suffice it to say, then, that the mine is now fortunate in having the services of such a capable manager as Mr. Thomas Hewitson, and this gentleman has great confidence in the future prosperity of the property. There are two working shafts on the mine, known as Judd's and Tetley's. The former has run a level at 800 ft., and will reach a depth of 1000 ft. very shortly. Tetley's shaft is down 650 ft., and is to be sunk another 220 ft. without delay. The main lodes in the mine are known as the Australia Main and the Australia East lodes, whilst two valuable ore bodies, known as the No. 1 and No. 2 cross lodes, have been struck since Mr. Hewitson took up the management. The Australia East lode runs into Hannans Oroya territory, and some rich ore has been taken from it at the 500 ft. level of Waddington's shaft, on the South Block of the Oroya. Broadly speaking, the Associated has nothing to fear in the way of a shortage of ore supplies, and with the active policy of development work now in operation. its ore reserves are constantly being added to. Most of the ore for milling purposes is hauled through Judd's shaft. The principal features of the treatment plant are ten No. 5 Krupp

ball mills, each of a capacity of 22 tons per day, four Ropp furnaces, and ten grinding pans, the latter to be supplemented by another score of pans before the end of the year 1901. Roughly, the Associated has turned out about 250,000 ounces of gold, and when the additions to the plant are completed the monthly gold yield will probably be about 8,000

ounces.

HANNAN'S BROWN HILL.

The Hannan's Brown Hill G.M. Co. Limited, owns five leases situated in the Kalgoorlie district, the area of the property amounting to fifty-five acres. Ꭺ large amount of development work has been accomplished by sinking, driving, and cross-cutting, and by means of diamond drill bore-holes. The main shaft has reached a depth of 600 ft., and from it seven levels have been driven, the iowest being 570 ft. from the surface. Practically, all the oxidised cres have been exhausted. They were successfully treated by means of a dry crushing plant of ball mills, and subsequent amalgamation, cyanidation, and filter pressing. The sulphide cres are being treated by the Diehl process, which embraces wet crushing in a stamp battery, concentration, and fine grinding to a state of slime in flint mills. The slimes are agitated with a solution of cyanide of potassium and bromo cyanide, and then filter pressed. The concentrates

arc roasted in an Edwards furnace, and then returned to the battery, after which they follow the same treatment as the proasted material.

The reduction plant consists of a 20stamp mill of latest design, by Messrs. Fraser and Chalmers; Wilfley concentrators, flint mills, and a double tailings wheel, whica elevates two different products at the same time. The pulp is classified by means of Spitzkasten, Spitzluten, and settling tanks. The cyanide plant is of splendid design and construction, consisting of agitating vats, receivers, and filter presses. Other machinery includes winding and pumprocking engines, air-compressing, drilling, and electric lighting plant. The company possesses very commachine shop, and plete a founof turning out dry capable castings up to two tons in weight. total amount of bullion recovered to June 30, 1901, is as follows:-145,120 tons crushed for 277,177 ozs. 6 dwts. 16 grs., or an average of 1 oz. 18 dwts. 4 grs. per ton, the value being £1,075,494 14s. 11d., The or £7 7s. 11d. per ton crushed. capital of the company is £225,000, of which £155,000 are issued and fully paid up. Dividends to the amount of £3 15s. per share have been paid.

SOUTH KALGURLI.

The

Although only a lease of twelve acres, the South Kalgurli is situated right in the heart of the auriferous deposits of the Golden Mile. There are two shafts on the property, known as the main and Morty's shafts, the latter out of compliment to Mr. Morty, the chairman of Most of the directors of the company.

work is done through the main shaft, and the lowest level is at 700 ft., but at time of writing preparations are under way for the resumption of sinking. The Consols lode, the marvellously rich run of ore which courses through the Lake View Consols and the Perseverance, extends into South Kalgurli ground, and provides some very high-grade ore for milling purposes. The South Kalgurli, however, is like a good many other mines on the field, in that it possesses numerous bunches, or lenses, of ore which are hard to define or name, but which, nevertheless, are valuable acquisitions to the mine's ore reserves. The ore treatment consists of Griffin mills and three Brown straight-line furnaces, and here it may be mentioned

that the South Kalgurli was the first mine on the field to adopt the now famous Riecken process. Briefly, there are four vats, known as electric vats, in connection with the Riecken plant, and the sides of each are fitted with amalgamated copper plates. The roasted product from the furnaces, after cooling, is despatched to a large reservoir, and there mixed with an equal part of water. It is then discharged into the electric vats, which are fitted with beaters or agitating arms. The constant agitation, and the fact that a spray of mercury is kept playing on the copper sides of the vats, account for the satisfactory results which the method has achieved. Mr. Iles, the capable manager of the South Kalgurli, is a great believer in the Riecken process, and his belief is shared by a good many others on the field.

capability, the mine now holds the proud position of being one of the best on the field.

There are two working shafts on the lease, known as the main and No. 3 shafts; and, in the case of the former, the lowest level is 550 ft., and at this depth the ore shute which courses through the property has been proved to

be just as rich as at the higher levels. Some idea of the wonderful extent of this shute will be gained when it is stated that its northerly continuation has been worked by the Brown-hill with good results, while in the south end the Oroya has tapped it with the diamond drill, and eighteen feet of the drill core gave an average value of eight ounces per ton. That it is equally rich in the Associated Northern is seen from the parcels of ore sent to the smelters, the total of 4,121 tons treated having yielded no less than 35,636 ounces, or an average of 8 ozs. 12 dwts. 22 grs. per ton. Again, it must be borne in mind that the whole of this marvellously rich ore has been taken out in pure development work, and as yet not a foot of stoping has been done in the mine. The vast potentialities of the property may thus be understood, and no other mine on the field has achieved the record of extracting 35,636 ounces from development work alone. Captain Rodda is not in a hurry over the installation of a treatment plant, as he believes, and rightly, too, that such high-grade stuff is more economically handled by sending it to the smelters. When it is finally decided to put up a plant, however, the question of the best method for the treatment of high class sulpho-telluride ore will probably have been satisfactorily determined.

ASSOCIATED NORTHERN.

The Associated Northern, or Iron Duke lease, is an off-shoot of the Associated Company, and lies right between Hannans Brown-hill and the north block of Hannans Oroya. Two years ago the nine was, comparatively speaking, unknown, but with the advent of Captain Rodda as manager a great change took place, and, thanks to his energy and

KALGURLI AND HAINAULT.

The Kalgurli and Hainault are what might be termed sister mines, and are practically under the same management. The Kalgurli is a twelve-acre lease, lying on the northern boundary of the Associated. Its lowest level is at 850 ft., but sinking will probably be resumed shortly. The Kalgurli possesses some huge lenses of sulpho-telluride ore, and, in places, the stopes are 30 ft. wide. Work at the lower levels shows that the cre is quite as rich at depth as at the higher levels, and the prospects for deeper sinking are very encouraging. The treatment plant is at present undergoing some modifications, and, in future, the ore will be crushed in Griffin mills and roasted in nine Edwards furnaces.

[graphic]

The plant started the treatment of ore in April, 1900, and up to the end of August, 1901, had treated 21,186 tons for a yield of 29,195 ounces.

The Hainault's lowest level is at 650 ft., where a huge ore body has recently been cut. The true thickness of this lode is not yet known but for a width of over 20 ft. it gives ounce values. The same lode has been opened up at the 400 ft. and 500 ft. levels, and at the latter level it has a width of 25 ft. The Hainault has a ten-head mill constantly running, but, in view of the recent gratifying development at the 650 ft. level, it is probable that the capacity of the crushing plant will be considerably increased.

This led to the sinking of a new shaft, and prospecting for the lode at the 509 ft. level of this shaft is now in progress. If prospected and developed on an extensive scale, the chances are in favour of the Star turning out a very valuable property.

The Great Boulder Main Reef is a twenty-four acre lease, situated on the boundary of the Great southern Boulder Proprietary, and managed by Mr. Mariner. The lowest workings are at the 800 ft. level, but it is proposed In to go to 1,000 ft. at an early date. the north drive, at the 600 ft. level, a sensationally rich shute of ore was cut towards the end of 1900, but operations at the 800 ft. level have so far failed to locate the continuation of this shute. The mine has considerable reserves of good grade sulphide ore, and treats close on 2,000 tons per month for a yield of over 2,000 ounces. Included in the treatment plant is a Richards shaft furnace, the only shaft furnace on the field; and capable of roasting thirty-five tons per day. Three Edwards roasters have also been installed, and these, fired with wood, have a capacity of about eighteen tons each per day. The crushing is done hy two No. 5 Krupp ball mills. To the end of August, 1901, the Great Boulder Main Reef had treated 50,708 tons for a yield of 78,523 ounces, an average of 1 oz. 10 dwts. 23 grs. per ton.

HANNAN'S STAR.

The Hannan's Star is a twelve-acre lease, lying south of Chaffers and Boulder Main Reef. The mine was the first

on the field to adopt the Diehl method of ore treatment, and the plant as at present constituted is capable of treating between fifty and sixty tons of ore per day. The costs of treatment are somewhere in the neighbourhood of 25s. per ton, but these could be considerably reduced were an increase in the capacity of the plant effected. Milling ore is now being taken from the stopes on the

NORTH KALGURLI.

The North Kalgurli is a recent amalgamation of the old North Kalgurli lease of twelve acres and the Brcokman Brothers Boulder lease of eighteen acres. At meetings of the two companies held in London in July, the scheme for amalgamation was adopted, and the new company is in future to be known as the North Kalgurli. As the name implies, the property is situated north of the The shaft on the Kalgurli gold mine. original North Kalgurli lease is 700 ft. deep, and at several of the levels very fair ore has been exposed to view, while a big oxidised formation or the surface The carries some very payable dirt. Brookman's Boulder shaft is down 1,000 ft., and at this depth a big sulphide lode has been opened up, but assays of its value have so far been very conflicting. On Brookman's Boulder there is also a
