FIGURE 31. I. texanus Banks. Male. A. Capitulum and scutum, dorsum. B. Capitulum, coxae and ventral plates, venter. C. Hypostome. D. Spiracular plate. E. Metatarsus and tarsus, leg I. F. Metatarsus and tarsus, leg IV.

Spiracular plate. Small, nearly circular and with few goblets. Diameter 0.096.

I. hearlei resembles I. texanus but the females of the latter are readily separated by the presence of a swelling or hump between the hypostome and the palpus. This hump is better seen in ventral view. The males of texanus have the punctation on the scutum and the goblets on the spiracular plate much more numerous than in hearlei. They differ also in various other minor characters.

HOSTS AND DISTRIBUTION

Bank's type material (originally 9 females, and a few larvae) of texanus was taken off raccoon, Live Oak County, Texas, November 30, 1908 (Coll. Mitchell and Bishopp).

Nuttall et al., 1911, p. 216, record 2 females taken from gray squirrel, King's River, California; 1 female from Procyon lotor, Mt. Lehman, B. C., Canada, 1910 (S. Hadwen).

Bishopp, 1912, pp. 32-33, adds: 1 female from Mustela pennanti, Trout Lake, Washington, March 8, 1901; 9 females from raccoon, Sabinal, Texas, February 4, 1910; 1 female from squirrel, Sabinal, Texas, April 5, 1910; 1 female from civet-cat, Utopia, Texas, September 11, 1910; 7 females, 24 nymphs, from raccoon, Sabinal, Texas, November 12, 1910; and the following quoted from p. 32: "In the Bitter Root Valley of Montana near Florence, Messrs. W. V. King and C. Birdseye have collected a considerable amount of material. During 1910 the following collections were made in that vicinity: 2 females on marten (Mustela c. origenes), March 13; 3 females on weasel (Putorius arizonensis), June 16; 2 females, 11 larvae on pine squirrel (Sciurus h. richardsoni), July 16; 2 females, 6 nymphs and some larvae on pine squirrel, July 16; 16 females, 1 nymph, 19 larvae, on pine squirrel, August 16. During 1911 the following collections were made: 3 females on marten, Lo Lo Hot Springs, Mont., March; 23 females, 13 nymphs on pine squirrel, Florence, Mont., July 26; 3 females, 8 nymphs on pine squirrel, Florence, Mont., August 20. Mr. C. Birdseye obtained 2 females (one-half and one-third engorged) which were collected January 18, 1912, on a marten near Woodman, Mont."
