Appendix I List of Type Specimens in the Nuttall Tick Collection Professor Nuttall, being a meticulous researcher, would customarily place blue "type" or "cotype" labels in vials containing the type specimen (s) of tick species, whether described by himself, coworkers at Cambridge, or foreign investigators. Keirans and Brewster (1981) discussed the type status of species described by Nuttall and his coworkers. There remain, however, certain problem areas. Matheson (1935) described three species of Ornithodoros, types of which may or may not be represented in the Nuttall collection (N3966, N3967, N3968). There are neither blue "type" or "cotype" labels in the vials containing the ticks nor any indication in the catalogue or on the vial labels that these are type specimens. Also, Matheson (op. cit.) stated that all specimens were deposited in the Cornell University collection. Nevertheless, most of the collecting data accompanying these specimens agree with data published by Matheson. The exact status of these Ornithodoros specimens remains moot. The following is a listing of the 160 tick species that are represented in the Nuttall tick collection by one or more type specimens. I am reasonably certain that specimens represented here have valid type status and that the list is relatively complete.
