PAPERS AND LETTERS ON SUBJECTS OF Literary, Historical and Political Interest, AND SPEECHES AT PUBLIC MEETINGS, IN PARLIAMENT, AND BY WILLIAM SHEE, ONE OF HER MAJESTY'S SERJEANTS AT LAW, AND SOME TIME M.P. FOR THE COUNTY OF KILKENNY. VOL. I. LONDON: PRINTED BY RAYNER AND HODGES, FETTER LANE. (For Private Circulation only.) MY DEAR GEORGE, To whom can these Essays and Speeches be so appropriately dedicated as to you, who have insisted on my revising and printing them? They will not be wholly useless if they convince you, that a man may obtain a fair share of such success in the profession which you have chosen, as depends upon his own exertions, without being so exclusively engrossed by it, as some would wish you to believe. The papers in this volume are of too early a date to excuse their reappearing beyond the limits of private circulation. Of the Speeches and Letters which are to follow, a few will perhaps, interest old friends at the Bar-others relating to public questions still unsettled, may, on account of the labour bestowed upon them, not be without their value, to legislators and statesmen. My chief object in the collection will be gained, if it help to satisfy you and your brother, in after life, that my course was one of sincerity and independence, that I was no idler in the positions which I have occupied, and that I made the most for your sakes, of the opportunities at my disposal. To GEORGE DARELL SHEE. Affectionately yours, WILLIAM SHEE. |
