it was amazing

Matilda by Roald Dahl is the novel of a talented young girl, with ignorant, selfish parents and an abusive headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. But Matilda was a gifted girl with incredible intelligence; she taught herself how to read at the age of three, started speaking perfectly at the age of 1 and a half, and can solve maths problems quickly.

Before she goes to school, Matilda ‘punishes’ her parents several times after they treat her unfairly. Her punishments, mostly aimed at her father, involves superglue, a friend’s parrot and more hilariously creative ways.

After being placed in her class at Crunchem Hall Primary, Matilda immediately notices that the headmistress is extremely unfair. Matilda is guided by the supportive Miss Honey, her teacher, who brings warmth and kindness to this novel. She makes friends with a young girl in her class, Lavender, who takes inspiration from a ten year old and plays a trick on Miss Trunchbull.

Eventually, she uses all her spare brainpower to do something spectacular and save the school from the headmistress with an interesting twist in the end of the novel.

The contrast between the warm kindness of Miss Honey and the cold cruelty of both Miss Trunchbull and Matilda’s parents is a highlight to this novel.

The humour entwined in this novel is a permeating strength with which Roald Dahl keeps readers wanting more. Quentin Blake’s illustrations breathes life into the novel, making it enjoyable to read.

Overall, it is an enrapturing novel suitable for children the age of 8 and above. Though slightly mature, it is a perfect book for young children.
