As much as I love Matilda, it's impossible for me to say that I "loved" this book when this amazing little girl's life was so appalling. It's deeply disturbing to me that any parent could and would talk to their child in so hurtful a way. I know it happens, but to read it in context of a children's book is very strange. And as a five year old, Matilda's only thought is one of a bizarre revenge justice in the face of an obviously unchanging horror. It will be very interesting when my compassionate and very sensitive daughter is old enough to read it. It will certainly inspire sobering conversation. It is an extreme and vivid portrayal of how words can crush or build up a soul, and how powerful kindness can be.
