Read this children's book for book club side-read.
As a child, I was a big fan of fairy tales and this shares some of the qualities that appealed to me--the special and unassuming heroine, Matilda, her neglectful, ogre-like parents, and the teacher who saves her who sort of plays the role of the fairy tale prince. And, of course, a happy ending.

I was thinking of you and your comment about loving fairy tales as a child as I read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman. The idea of fairy tales is interspersed with the main character's story throughout the entire novel. I think you would like this book.
