Dr. David Beck is devastated when he is beaten and his wife, Elizabeth, is abducted, so eight years later when he gets an cryptic email from someone claiming to be his wife, he freaks out. He knows she's dead. Her body was found and the killer is behind bars, but he knows if there's the slightest chance it's really her, he has to find her. Little does David know, in pursuing Elizabeth, he will risk everything. I really enjoyed this thriller. There are so many twists and turns that I never saw the end coming. I also loved the characters, Shauna being my favorite. Who wouldn't love a friend like her. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery. ( )

I loved this book. It was very hard to put down and the characters I thought were very well written. There was non-stop action throughout and it was hard to predict what would happen next. I will surely be reading more books by this author. ( )

Good Film =/= Good Book

I got halfway through this before giving up as it's just unpleasant to read/ listen to from the topic, to the not so great writing, and the OK narration.

I feel rather like I did when reading the Codename Villanelle books after watching Killing Eve -- truly blown away with what scriptwriters, directors, and actors can do with rather meh source material. Also reminiscent of the CV books, but not translated into other media is the snide conservatism and white patriarchal undertones that infuse the writing.

My experience continues to tell me that good books often make bad movies, while bad books can be made into far better media.

If you want trashy airport thriller crack on, but if you want an actually weighty action thriller I would say watch the French movie instead. ( )

Admittedly this was an audio book and I struggle with having someone read to me. My mind wonders, by attention is deflected by I don't know food? Or what I need to do? Or what I didn't do?

It was read to me and I can't remember it. But I'll be there for book club when..... SQUIRREL! ( )

This was a pretty quick read. It kept my interest throughout the book - I never knew until the very end what was really going on.

A caring doctor and his wife end up as suspected murderers, fugitives, more or less dead, etc. Perhaps not super original, but an original take on the premise. About what you'd expect if you've read any Harlan Coben books. Personally, I like them. ( )

David Beck and his wife Elizabeth were childhood sweethearts and newlyweds. It’s been eight years since the night he was attacked out on the lake and she was abducted and killed by a serial killer. But now he’s getting messages from someone knowing things only Elizabeth could know. And the messages say he must do exactly what they tell him and tell know one someone is contacting him. This was the first book I’d ever read by Harlan Coban. Some parts got a little graphic in places, but easy to skip over those spots if you’re squeamish. At first there were a lot of moving pieces, backstory and characters to keep track of, but as we got further in, the pieces can together with so many cool twists I didn’t anticipate and it was such a great surprise! I really loved this thriller.

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

Suspenseful and surprising. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed by Harlan Coben. ( )

Another thrilling read from Harlan Coben. An original and interesting idea about Beck's wife Elizabeth, who was murdered eight years ago returning. The plot became more and more entangled and complicated and it could be hard to keep up. The twists and turns carried on right to the very last page. Set in New York, there is plenty of grit in this novel and the importance of family. There is also loyalty and kindness. ( )

Good mystery. But ending had too many twists that were not foreshadowed and felt like forced. ( )

This is the best Harlan Coben book I've read in a long time. It has everything you'd expect - lots of exciting twists and turns, most of which you won't see coming, a good mix of romance, and it's and fast-paced and engaging. It's usual Coben - but better. ( )

Wow. Harlan Coben leaves his series for this book and breaks new ground which I sure hope he plans on continuing. Dr. David Beck's childhood sweetheart and wife is murdered 8 years ago and while his life has gone on, the hole her death created has only widened. And then the past connects to the present and the story is full of tightly connected twists and turns with a plot so complicated that I'll be thinking about this story for weeks. It's one of the very best things I've read in a long, long time. ( )

Dr. David Beck's wife was murdered, or so he thought. Eight years later questions arise and he finds himself in the middle of one of the most mysterious quests to find the truth about what happened that night. Filled with twists and numerous potential perpetrators, Beck finds himself struggling to obtain the truth. This was a great read. ( )

Liked the book. It was an interesting read even if predictable in spots. Loved the author interview at the end of the audiobook. ( )

I really wanted to enjoy this book but that was impossible after the major reveal was made clear to the reader maybe halfway through. After that, there was little suspense in it left for me. The other twists were ineffective and the plot overall was pretty bad and boring. It ended up just being a chore to finish and I wish I hadn't wasted my time on this. This "mystery" is about as edgy as a butter knife. ( )

A GREAT MYSTERY STORY INVOLVING A WIFE AND A WEALTHY CITIZEN. MANY TWISTS AND TURNS. HUSBAND HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF MURDER AND THE WIFE IS SUPPOSEDLY DEAD. ( )

I had not read a Harlan Coben novel before, although there are lots. This one is a fast-paced story that gripped me right from the beginning and kept me guessing to the end. There is some nasty violence - it is a crime story after all - but it is full of interesting characters and plot twists. In a few places I had to suspend my disbelief; but it all eventually unfolds. This is not Coben's best; perhaps one of his subcontracted works, Still, I kept reading because I didn't really know what was going on and there was enough sustained tension.

Stand-alone suspense that has familiar themes but is really well done.

A pediatrician who works with an inner-city clinic still mourns his new bride, the childhood sweetheart he'd married only months before she was murdered while they were at the family's cottage celebrating the anniversary of their relationship. That was eight years ago. Now he receives an anonymous email that is phrased in words that only the two of them would know, such as "kiss time", the exact time they originally kissed. This sets off a whirlwind of events and violence over several days in which he tries to determine if it's a hoax or she's somehow alive, people around him start to get tortured to death, and he is accused by the FBI of having killed her in the first place. It's pretty tense, for all that it seems it's been done before, and I was hooked, hoping that the time wouldn't be wasted. It wasn't! Now I'm going to look into Coben's other (crowded) backlist, of which this seems to be the first I've read. Isn't it nice to find an established author you've only just discovered? ( )
