At times, I was fearful to not be immersed in this haunting and deeply tragic novel. I was very much afraid I would turn a corner or flip on a light to see a demonic monster standing in my wake. In this way alone, Shelley is beyond successful. But her deep and thorough characters, well planned and executed plot, and literary merit to last a lifetime, Mary Shelley crafted, perhaps, the most timeless and horrifying work ever. Her examination of human nature, of science, and of art, has solidified her as one of the most iconic English writers in history - and with very good reason.
