A really odd book of Roald Dahl's (but aren't they all?) that I had never read before. Listening to the audio performed Kate Winslet, some of the over-the-top verbal and physical child abuse scenes really were too much. Reading it silently I might not have even noticed how terribly awful they were. It felt like he was going along, expounding on all sort of horrible things a teacher could do to a child, and then suddenly he realized he was going to have to finish it up somehow and so cobbled something of a plot together to get to the ending. Not really sure why it's on anyone's must-read list (which is how I found it) but we did finish it.
